Frequently Asked Questions
Is traffic insurance mandatory everywhere?
Almost every country requires some form of third-party motor insurance. The specific requirements, minimum coverage amounts, and enforcement mechanisms vary significantly. In our five covered countries, all require mandatory insurance except New Zealand, where ACC covers personal injury but private vehicle insurance is technically optional (though strongly recommended).
How do comparison sites make money?
Insurance comparison sites earn commissions from insurers when you purchase a policy through their platform. This doesn't increase your premium — insurers pay the commission from their marketing budget. We link to comparison sites that offer the best rates and disclose all affiliate relationships transparently.
What is Trafikförsäkring and who needs it?
Trafikförsäkring (traffic insurance) is mandatory third-party liability insurance required for every motor vehicle registered in Sweden — including vehicles that aren't being driven. Even a car parked in your garage must be insured. The only exception is vehicles that have been officially deregistered with Transportstyrelsen. Penalties for non-compliance include a daily fee of approximately 50 SEK charged by Trafikförsäkringsföreningen (TFF).
Can I drive in the UAE with international insurance?
No. You need a UAE-issued motor insurance policy. International or home-country insurance is not valid for vehicles registered in the UAE. If you're renting, the rental company typically includes basic insurance. For your own vehicle, you must purchase from a UAE-licensed insurer. The minimum required is third-party liability coverage of at least AED 250,000.
What changed with Turkey's 2025 insurance reform?
Turkey significantly increased mandatory coverage limits starting April 2025. The new regulations also raised minimum health insurance requirements for residence permit holders, with updated coverage standards that better reflect current medical costs. This means both drivers and expats need to review their existing policies to ensure compliance with the new standards.
Why is Irish motor insurance so expensive?
Ireland has historically had among the highest motor insurance premiums in Europe. Contributing factors include a high claims frequency, generous court awards for personal injury, a relatively small market with limited competition, and the impact of insurance fraud. However, premiums have been declining since 2020 following government reforms, and comparing providers can save €200–400 annually.
Do I need insurance if ACC already covers me?
ACC (Accident Compensation Corporation) only covers personal injury — not damage to your vehicle, other vehicles, or property. Without private insurance, you're personally liable for all property damage costs, which can easily reach tens of thousands of dollars in a serious accident. While private vehicle insurance isn't legally mandatory in NZ, going without it is a significant financial risk.
